Hi,
Your suggested command "bzr branch lp:ubuntu/gedit" gives this:

$bzr branch lp:ubuntu/gedit
Most recent Ubuntu version: 3.10.4-0ubuntu6
Packaging branch version: 3.1.1-0ubuntu4
Packaging branch status: OUT-OF-DATE
