anyone else having their 14.04 boot hanging before syslog starts?

since mid-day today my 14.04 (completely up to date) seems to hang
somewhere in the boot process before syslog starts.

if I power off and boot through recovery, then resume, all seems ok, but no
sign of what went astray in syslog...

this on a System76 gazp8 running 64bit.

any advice?  Thanks in advance!
