I went on this channel (#ubuntu-server) a couple of days ago, and it was 
completely useless.  People talking about playing volleyball and asking 
extremely naive questions ("why is it that when I type su - I get a ~ 
prompt and when I type su I get a / prompt?") that google could answer 
in 2 seconds.  Unbelievable.  In any case I posted the question, and it 
was met with a deafening silence (most likely since it didn't involve 
volleyball or unix neophyte questions).

I'm going to try upgrading the firmware on the HBA -- I'm starting to 
suspect that this is what my problem is.
