If you've done a version upgrade on your usual laptop, try saving your 
data and doing a clean re-install of whatever version you want to use.  
Note that 13.04 runs faster than any recent previous version, and 13.10 
is currently looking REAL good.  12.[anything] is a bit slow on my old 
netbook.
