It's probably a bug, Lucid is a development release, so this kind of
things could happen.
It's better you test your laptop using a live CD or USB.
Download the ISO from
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/
burn it to a CD or use it to create a bootable USB disk using usb-creator.
