Ubuntu-qa Digest, Vol 14, Issue 1

Hi all,
I am new to the Ubuntu QA mailing list, and have to report a problem copying
Ubuntu 8.1 to CD. It seems to be missing an essential part which allows the
disk to install to computer.
I am running a stand-alone PC - not connected to the net- at work, and I am
unable to do a live update of 8.04 which is currently installed on the
machine. Can anyone suggest what this problem might be?
Also...
There seems to be a small problem with samba and its usage/compatibility
with several programs. Is there an update or fix for this too?
Thanks,
Greg

Hello all,

We are pleased to announce the next Ubuntu Testing Day that will be next
Monday, November 10th.[1]

The Ubuntu Testing day is a special day where the Ubuntu Community comes
together with a shared goal of testing a specific set of ISO images (Alpha,
Beta, RC, Gold or Point releases), a specific feature or some bugs needing
verification. Taking the idea from the Ubuntu Bug Day [2] we want to apply
the same concepts to ISO testing.

Who can join the Testing Day?
Everyone. You don?t need to be a developer. You don?t need to know how to
code. Everyone is welcome. If you don?t know how to help, then just stop on
by and we?ll explain everything to you. In fact, one of the objectives of
the Testing Day is to help people willing to start testing Ubuntu to make it
better.

Where to join the Testing Day?
Come to #ubuntu-testing on freenode IRC. We will be there day and night
resolving your testing questions you might have. You can even ask for help
on creating new automated tests for Ubuntu!
Normal testing activity takes place in #ubuntu-testing at other times also.

Which is the goal for this testing day?
We know we just released Intrepid a week ago, but we have a lot of pending
SRU bugs in Hardy needing verification. Hardy is a LTS release and,
therefore, it needs to be kept in shape for a longer period. SRU is the
process to get updates into a stable release. Please, refer to the SRU wiki
page [3] for more information on the process.

Please join us next Monday and help making Ubuntu better!

Cheers,
Ara.

I've revamped our IdeaPool page [1] with a view to collecting ideas for
the Jaunty development cycle, and in particular topics we should be
looking to cover at UDS.

Please add your ideas and lets see how we can make QA even better for
Jaunty!

There were some ideas still on the page, so I have marked those for
review - if you can help clean those up, that would be appreciated.

Hello,
With the release of the Dell Mini 9 the Ubuntu Community has an
opportunity to become involved with pre-release and update testing for
the custom engineering group. As many, if not all of you are aware the
Dell Mini 9 shipped with a custom version of Ubuntu, based on Hardy, but
sporting a new desktop interface. As we move forward, the system will
require ongoing updates and security fixes. This is where the community
can help us keep the quality of our updates high, our customers happy,
and happy customers means more Ubuntu pre-loaded devices.

The OEM Services group is setting up a proposed repo, to handle updates
for the mini 9 and other netbook devices. As the QA lead, I would like
to find out the level of interest in helping out with this testing.
Those of you with devices would be highly valuable testers, but there is
a chance for a program in the future to provide hardware to those
interested in this kind of work.

So, please respond to me directly with your comments, questions, and we
can begin to organize an effort around this new class of devices running
Ubuntu.

Sincerely,
Chris

Chris,
I am in possession of a Dell Mini 9. I am not a member of QA. I am
not a programmer. I would be interested in finding out what I can do to
help. My use of the Mini is primarily to show people what Ubuntu is,
and what it is capable of.

I am, however, one of the editors of the UWN, and your reply may be
used in the next issue.

I can be reached at tyche at ubuntu.com, or in the IRC channel
#ubuntu-us-az, or #ubuntu-news

I'm not Chris and can't speak specifically for how the Dell mini 9
updates process will be handled, but I would expect that it would not
be terribly different from the way Stable Release Updates (SRUs) are
handled in general.

To be explicit, to test proposed updates does not require programming
expertise; what's more useful is to be a slightly more experienced user
and an attention to detail. Basically, the process for testing specific
fixes is:

	1) reproduce original problem
	2) install the proposed update
	3) attempt to reproduce problem again
	4) look for possible regressions
	5) report results

We do ask that testers be slightly more experienced than a basic user
both to help recognize regressions and as there is some small risk that
an update may cause problems that may not be straightforward to revert;
ideally, fixes that have made it to the -proposed repository have been
vetted enough to not do that. A tester should also be comfortable
enabling and disabling package repositories; experience with a command
line could be helpful but is not required at all.

I gave an open week presentation walking through how I did a specific
verification, the log of which is at

  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MeetingLogs/openweekintrepid/VerifySRU

I used some apt commands directly, but there was nothing I did there
that required being a programmer or couldn't have been done through the
gui tools (synaptic in particular).

By all means. Thanks for the interest and the work you do on UWN!

I've burned this iso from several mirrors and I get an error each time I
check the disk.

Is anyone else getting issues with this?

Thanks,
Chris

I just downloaded the torrent yesterday and burned it. It passed the
integrity check and installed fine. While this isn't a direct ISO I would
imagine it comes from the same place.

I would suspect your issue is a bad set of discs, a bad burner, or a bad
reader. However it wouldn't hurt to hear a confirmation of a successful ISO
download, I suppose!
