Só tenho uma placa de rede, mais nada.
Segui a tua sugestão e depois configurei o ip com a applet do 
networkmanager. Agora tenho isto no /etc/network/interfaces:

    auto lo
    iface lo inet loopback

    iface eth0 inet static
    address 192.168.1.2
    netmask 255.255.255.0
    gateway 192.168.1.1

    auto eth0
