Hi mubashar,
the thing about slow is mine one took about 1 hr :)
and you'll face this slow time no matter what if you didnt upgrade your ram
... now about tweaking,
Gnome will consume all of the memory because the swap (virtual mem ) is also
our ram and gnome also takes a lot of ram ... so what can a computer bechara
do :)
what i know that when at the time of boot when the kernel starts to show
messages of booting and uncompressing linux etc ... try hitting ALT + CTRL +
F1 key ... this will alow you to switch to not graphical mode ... and then
wait for the boot process to end and you'll get a login prompt
then at that time again press ALT + CTRL + F7 key .. and you'll see you
desktop loaded ... now again a slow process ...but due to this all the fancy
startup screens will be gone and you'll see you desktop ....

now if you want to really switch to linux ... try installing linux ... not
in your system then on some spare system etc ...and upgrade your system if
you really want to get the feel of Good live cd experience

Linux *is* user friendly. It's just selective about who its friends are.
In a world without walls and fences, who needs windows and Gates ?
