Dear all,
I'm glad to know that the leader of Ubuntu wants the KDE and Gnome to
be improved aesthetically.
- From the time being this is not yet I wanted. I recently installed
Hardy on one of the desktops in the HR's office in the company where I
work. My goal is to slowly convert users to Linux desktop(I only
converted 2 so far), these users were not using Windows-based
accounting software, since it is a pain to set-up an ODBC connection
from Linux to a MS SQL server, at least for me as I am not yet
successful.
Now, we have this printer Canon Pixma ip1200. There is no linux driver
for it, but an alternative driver(
http://www.iuselinux.com/2008/08/installing-canon-pixma-ip1200-printer.html
) was provided. Openoffice calc can now print, but when we test
openoffice text it won't(Ubuntu's latest openoffice). The weird thing
is that Microsoft Office 2003 (through wine) word document is able to
print on the printer, while the native openoffice text is unable. And
MS Office when run through wine have several problems, it won't open
some files created by the same version of office in Windows. And my
time is limited just to follow some obscure tutorials on how Microsoft
Office will run well on wine. Also it is not practical for me to buy a
copy of crossover. If you have some recommended websites for this, I
will appreciate it.
I am going to replace Ubuntu with XP to remove this headache.
Ubuntu/Gnome's user interface was never a hindrance for migrating our
users. They don't even know that there is a changed in the OS, they
don't know of course of what is "OS" or the difference, for only they
thought that it was still Windows with a different interface that has
a name "Ubuntu" as the startup image. For me, the current user
interface of both KDE and Gnome is very good, the only thing that
keeps me going is Printer driver and ODBC.
regards,
allan
