[Ubuntu-PH] ubuntu-ph Digest, Vol 17, Issue 5 Advice for Newbies

To you,

First, don't install at once, if you have the Ubuntu 6.06 LTS version or
later (if any); try to boot and use the CD as is(LIVE version) if all
you're hardware is working then you could install ( if you'd like). Mind
you I like ubuntu.
Here's an advice that will generate a lot of ire; For newbies, check ubuntu
website of hardware supported.(if there is such a list) well, again I don't
have time to check for you. I don't want to antagonize you people but ubuntu
didn't properly detected my ATI 9550 Radeon video card when I did the
standard install although (6.06 LTS) although it quite properly detected
when I chose the second option installation but the refresh rate is set to 0
Hz. With a few modification it's ok. It failed on another computer (Ubuntu
LTS) and the video card is S3 Trio 3D /2X for an old computer. Which by
comparison is detected properly by RHEL 4.2 and Mandriva 10, Fedora Core 3.
Knoppix is good at detecting hardware too. This is what we could
improve(Video Card Support) on and regarding ATI website, it's not much help
because it point you to open source sites too and there you could spend some
time searching. But you could stick to Ubuntu and know much more about it's
community. And if all else fails there is the *ubuntu how to site and *
www.tldp.org (The Linux Documentation Project) where you search the many how
to's regarding hardware.

With much apology,

Daniel Ortega
