[Ubuntu-PH] Pagsalin sa Filipino WAS: newbie pow

Good day guys,

After all has been said and done about translating Ubuntu to Filipino, at
the end of the day, it would all depend on the user or the one who will
install it what language of choice he will use/install it.

Although much has been said about us adopting Tagalog for official
communications (ex. in government offices) it would still take much effort
to use it for the whole country (ex. in school, and private offices, etc.)

I am from Pasay City. I grew up and worked there for a while before I
decided to permanentlly transfer here in the Visayas. I have been here long
enough to appreciate the differences between Tagalog and Cebuano dialects.
One thing I can say is that the Cebuano dialects vocabulary is a little more
specific in some terms which doesnt have direct translation in Tagalog.
                English Cebuano Tagalog
Example: husband - bana - asawa (generic, either husband or
wife)

Another point is that, you guys from Metro manila talk and speak in what we
call now as tagalog (taglish), we have to agree that we have lost the real
Filipino vocabulary. We use a mixed medium (with english) in our everyday
communication as opposed to the vernacular. Who among of you would say "ay
siyang tunay" to mean "oh yeah" or "I agree" or "it's true". Even our
elementary brothers and sisters would scratch thier heads if you ask them
what is a "watawat" or "aklat".

All I know is that visayans (most if not all) despise tagalog. Imagine
hearing in a restaurant somebody asking a waiter for a cold bottle of coke,
"bay! bigyan mo nga ako ng isang botelya ng coke, yung maginaw! (maginaw
means the same as malamig which both translate to cold in english).

I dont want to be a devils advocate about a very noble effort in translating
Ubuntu in tagalog, but if you are talking about what is for the common good,
I would tend to stick with the english version.

Another 2 cents worth.
