Hello again, and thank you.

Your enquiry set the cat amongst the pigeons.

I remember a few days ago adding the CD as a possible source, in case the package manager wanted something from there, before going out to the world.

The system wouldn't let me modify the sources.list to remove the CD, and
wouldn't remember a password for root, when I tried to change user to
root.

I've reinstalled Ubuntu, figuring I had a bad install, and accepted the option to immediately update the various applications. It was successful! And subsequent requests for packages have been accepted.

So; that problem's solved. And I can be root, now.

Awesome.
