Ah sorry I misread your email.

Yes you will probably lose data unless you had your /home in a
different partition and were careful so don't re-install.

Maybe your grub configuration got messed up somehow or you had a
custom grub conf and the update overwrote it. Does that ring a bell?
Do you remember any prompts about the grub configuration file?
