Sorry I am not in the Taranaki area but here are a few suggestions.
Ubuntu is good but it has two major glitches; one is the installer
(largely fixed in 7.04) the other is in internet connectivity,
especially internal dial up modems. If you have a external modem connect
it to com 1 or 2
Try the following:
Go to administration (system) and click on network.
You will be asked for your admin password which is the same as you log
in password.
This will bring up the network diaglog box with two entries; one for
wired (Broadband) the other dial.
Highlight the dial up then click properties (on the right) and fill in
the required fields, number tyo be dial, your username, and password.
Click modern Oon the sam,e diag box, that is properties) on modem name
try /dev/ttySO or /dev/ttysi using the detct modem in each case to see
if the modem is detected.
Make sure tones not pulses are selected.
Return to main dialog box tick the little white box next to the dial up
modem.
Hopefully this will get you connected, if not then youi'll have to use
the command line, a messy business.
Once you are connected the first thing is to download Gnome ppp which is
a proper and understandable graphical dial up program.
Why this (Gnome ppp) is not included in the installation is one of the
many problems you will discover with Ubuntu. Despite all the problems
and frustration with Windows you won't find Unbuntu a great deal - if
any - better. I have two boxes running Windows (Vista) and Ubuntu, they
both cause me endless grief.
Be warned: Xtra is not linux friendly, more so than the other ISOs and
you may well need to get a router to get connected.
Once you are connected you mayl need to configure Firefox and
Thunderbird to work properly, Get back to us on that.
