In a situation like this you should have multiple kernels installed, so
even if the update to 2.6.17 is not working correctly you will be able
to choose a previous (working :-) kernel at your next boot.
When you do so the initrd image may well be buildable after a reboot.
You can confirm that you do have multiple kernels installed with a
command like "dpkg --get-selections | grep linux-image-", or by looking
in /boot/grub/menu.lst for what kernel entries are present in the boot
menu.
