Yeah I am lurking on this list.
I have been interested in computers since 1970 but only
really got into it in recent years.
C64 -amiga - forth etc. I got a pc and went to Tech 1997 and
did NDBC (3 year course) part time. This was great. I learnt
quite a bit of C some C++ and lots of VB6 which put me off
MS to some extent. Since attending an install fest I have
been gradually learning and using Open Source. For me computing is
a hobby. (This could change if I loose my current job).
Currently I am working through Thinking in C (as revision) and
will be working through the 2 Thinking in C++ books. I have
played with gambas and anjuta. For the kinds of programs I
like to write (simulations etc) gambas would probably be too slow.
I decided to bite the bullet and have started to learn to program with
the command line. At some point I will spend time on learning how
to program graphics and interfaces etc.

I use ubuntu and not kubuntu because I do not have time to spend
sorting out issues. (KDE would be great but I see too many kubuntu
problems on the lists). Ubuntu seems to be mostly trouble free.
Recently I got broadband. I connected a ethernet cable from the
modem router to my laptop and clicked on apply updates.
It asked for the ubuntu 6.06 and kubuntu 6.06 disks (which I fortunately
had) and did some downloading and after several cycles
off updating my machine was upgraded from 5.10 to 6.06 without
rebooting. (I was prepared to do a clean reinstall if things went
wrong). I had bad experiences trying to upgrade with mandriva in the
past - so was impressed. There are a couple of issues but I can live
with those for the moment. (No usb stick icon on hotplugging but the
file browser opens so I can use the stick and I can unmount from the
command line).

I set up a machine for my cousin with ubuntu 5.10 on it and she was
pleased. For newbies I think gnome ubuntu may be easier to deal with now
than MS.

Felt guilty each time someone introduced themselves on the list so know
I have done it

best
