Taking to kernel in an introductory programming class might be
overwhelming... esp with all the things that you have managed to squeeze
in there. The best you can do to make everyone understand IMO is do a
menuconfig and compile.. or add some syscall, which I feel is gimmicky
at best and not really effective for learning in an introductory course.
I'd prefer teaching some debugging tools like gdb.. Learning gdb would
benefit the programmers in day to day life. Most of us don't really need
to compile kernels on a regular basis but living without gdb (and
emacs/eclipse depending on mood) is unimaginable as a programmer.
There are some catches when compiling with gcc, even setting java
classpaths might be confusing sometimes, it might be whole lot better to
go over those things that the developers would do on a day to day basis
and will benefit them in their works.
