Ja, ubuntu is opgesplitst in 3 delen:
$ apt-cache show ubuntu-minimal
Package: ubuntu-minimal
Description: Minimal core of Ubuntu
 This package depends on all of the packages in the Ubuntu minimal system,
 that is a minimally functional system that can boot and install more
 packages.

Je kunt je systeem veranderen in kubuntu door kubuntu-desktop te
installeren, in xubuntu dmv xubuntu-desktop, enzovoort.
Alle bouwen op de basis die ubuntu-minimal en -standard leggen.

Ubuntu-server is een selectie uit het ubuntu-archief van veelgebruikte
server-software die op de cd gezet zijn zodat de server-admin een image
heeft waar al z'n favo software op staat.
vziw is dat niets meer dan ubuntu-standard met bv apache en mysql op de
cd, zodat deze makkelijk en snel te installeren zijn.

Het is geen distributie, geen deriviaat, geen fork, het is gewoon een
shortcut voor de admins onder ons.
