Welcome to the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter, Issue #31 for the week March
1st - March 10, 2007. In this issue we cover some of the buzz that is
starting to build up around the Feisty Fawn release. We've also got
our hands on some very juicy forum statistics, we get to welcome the
US Ohio LoCo team after being officially approved, and we're back to
our regular release schedule. Enjoy!

=== Linspire to be Based on Kubuntu, first Ubuntu-based distro to have
Click and Run ===

Linspire announced that they will be switching to base their
distribution off Ubuntu.  With their polished KDE desktop this makes
Linspire the latest in the impressive list of operating systems based
off Kubuntu.

It was also announced that Linspire's Click and Run install programme
would be added to the Ubuntu archive, giving users of all Ubuntu
distributions easy access to a large range of free and proprietry
software.

=== Kubuntu and Ubuntu at Chemnitzer-LinuxTage ===

March 3 and 4, Kubuntu and Ubuntu had their booths on a major FOSS
event in Germany, the Chemnitzer-LinuxTage. Both projects had their
booths side by side and therefore the collaboration was fine.
A lot of visitors came to ask about the differences between the
different desktops and projects, about the changes in feisty and to
see and experience them. We gave away about 300 Kubuntu CDs (Dapper
and Edgy) and we could have given more but were sold out the second
day, while about 500 Ubuntu CDs were provided.

The forums administrator, ubuntu-geek, has released impressive numbers
related to the official Ubuntu forums:

 * over 14,000 new accounts each month
 * average ~22,000 new threads a month
 * average ~136,000 new posts each month
 * average ~3.7 million visits each month
 * average ~12.6 million page views per month
 * ~74% of visitors use Firefox
 * ~12% of visitors use IE
 * ~61% of visitors use Linux
 * ~35% of visitors use Windows
 * ~57% of traffic is recurring visitors
 * ~42% of traffic is new traffic visitors
 * ~69% of traffic comes from google
 * ~5% of traffic comes from *.ubuntu.com
 * ~3% of traffic comes from digg.com

=== Ohio US Team approved ===

The [:OhioTeam:Ohio US LoCo Team] was granted "official" status at the
February 26th Community Council Meeting.  The Ohio Team, while among
the youngest LoCo Teams, has benefited from a steady stream of new
Team Members who collectively represent nearly every user demographic
in the Ubuntu universe.  Current Ohio Team Members include Ubuntu
Forum staff, Marketing Team members, business owners seeking Ubuntu
partnership, and even some fledgeling developers.  The Ohio Team's
active projects include partnering with Ohio Libraries to distribute
and circulate Ubuntu-related media, writing and publishing educational
curricula for Ubuntu and FOSS, and representing the Ubuntu Community
at the 2007 [http://www.ohiolinux.org/ Ohio Linux Fest].  If you're an

"Heise open", the open source portal of Germany's leading computer
magazine, writes about Ubuntu and the latest steps Canonical has taken
in building new business models. The article mentions the co-operation
with SpikeSource and Linspire as signs of continuous growth within the
Open Source market.

We're happy to see a young startup company is offering notebooks and

Feisty's current development status has bien reported on ZD Australia
by Renai LeMay, highlighting what as been happening with the "Compiz
by default" specification.

The French parliament has chosen Ubuntu for all the Members of
Parliament computer (and assistants). Linagora and Unilog will provide
support for those 577 'political' computers.

In a recent meeting for Xubuntu, the Xubuntu Testers team was decided
upon and announced by Cody Somerville. The Xubuntu testers team, which
will be headed by Jim Campbell is dedicated to testing the latest and
greatest in Xubuntu, including nightly disk images. They can be found
