[ubuntu-mythtv] closed captions

Due to hearing problems, I use a combination of normal audio and closed
captions when watching Myth TV.
Unfortunately in the closed captions the wide letters are are chopped off.
For example "m" and "w" appear as slightly distorted " r" and "v". So the
word mow reads rov and welcome reads velcor.
The problem is the same in all the themes.
It seems that a variable width font is used in a fixed width space.
Therefore the longer letters cannot be clearly rendered.
Any ideas on how to correct the problem would be appreciated.
