I would suggest a Radeon card. Linux support is quite sufficient for
high quality video playback without the need for proprietary drivers.
I've been been quite happy using Radeon cards in my MythTV system for
over five years. As already pointed out, the CPU is quite powerful so
VDPAU is not necessary. I've been using a 2GHz Athlon64 x2 CPU for quite
a few years for HD playback.

If I were putting together a brand new x86_64 MythTV system today, I'd
almost certainly try to use integrated Intel video instead of a discrete
AMD or Nvidia card to save money, power and space. Any integrated video
should be sufficient for MythTV these days though I don't have direct
experience to base a recommendation on.
