Open Source concept in the general market
Open source is recently now becoming a philosopy/marketing concept and
shortly you can describe as this: Made by you; made for you. The
decades directly after the big wars were based on protection not
sharing. Especially the manufacturing companies were protecting their
trade marks and or patents with fanatic efforts. Still you see this.
But more and more the idea gets more and more attention and support
that research and development should be more open -- especially with
the NEW TOOL 'INTERNET'.

A good example for the open source idea is the free availabe
linux-software: like Ubuntu; Fedora; Suse and much more.

And fortunately a lot of more software: PHP; HTML; MYSQL; Postgresql;
FTP Open Office Gimp a whole list of generally unknown software.
Imagine how many people contribute though internet to develop these
software which now used DAILY.

But let us do some exploration in other areas:

Like fashion; cars on fuel cells; food.

New vision: Open Source. Time will prove it will survive but to my
perspective it is in fact the most democratic way of research and
development. By everyone; for everyone. Not a few "isolated" academics
in a labority. No...the people in their homes -- among them of course
a great deal of academics / higher educated people.

It is a new concept. And........last and not least people can discover
for themselves their talents.
