[ubuntu-my] difficulty spreading Ubuntu or any Linux

Linux is about freedom. Why should we bother if other still want to use windows and reluctant to use Linux? People have rights to decide what they like. As Linus once said, Linux is not to replace Windows, it just a choice of another OS. We all converge to this mailing list because we like linux and would like to bond together. There are millions outside there who just want the computer get their job done and don't bother what OS it is. As long as it done the job the it is fine. They have other thing to pursure such as sales figure, feed the kids, pick up kids from school.
Life is about enjoying and respecting others......

I did show and provide Ubuntu to a total End User that use PC for just browsing internet, listening to music and videos... all I do is load their PC with Ubuntu + tools they'll need and then a little instruction by phone...

I think its just common sense... I told these PC users, PC is same like their handphone... have anyone been 'sticked' with any phone OS? can't use any phone without the same OS? Everytime they buy or borrow new or other's handphone, they can still use the phone to make call, SMS, MMS or what so ever they want. Maybe some phone have lack features but still, any features that is there will always be there... They just have to know how to use it with their common sense. Problem will always occur but they will always have us to show them the right path on doing things right on something we already know...

Here's how I encourage these people to learn more on their tools... I told them what exciting things which is within their interest (as I get to know them better) they can do with their machine. sometimes, that can also been achieved in ms windows but with some tricks... i won't tell the windows way but i'll tell em the Ubuntu way which sometimes is a lot quicker and easier... when they know that, i'll just tell others among their friends with the same interest, what this user can do with his tools and he/she will be proud of themselves and their tools and start to explore more...

The only type that I can't do anything about it is those who don't like computer at all... they use computer as they are forced to use it. they don't even enjoy it. they see the keyboard and mouse like waiting to eat them... believe it or not there are people out there who are afraid of computers... even the ATM machine make em frightened to death... hahaha

Why people are reluctant to try linux? because years ago, linux have been conquered by those weirdos who wanna call themselves so called 'Elite'... they don't enjoy helping others and all these newbies can get while dealing with them is words like RTFM and so on... Don't blame them, we have to change that among ourselves. It's nothing wrong of being humble and helpful. we will get the benefit soon. That's what Ubuntu is built for... isn't it? 'Humanity to others'...

Another thing is that when they heard "Linux", they think "bunch of commands" - They don't know we can do point-n-click too! :)

my view is that most people are just too reluctant to try something new
or different. most young computer users (students especially) grew up in
the age of Windows. hardly any know DOS even.

presented with a Ubuntu desktop, they are lost. they look for the Start
button or Control Panel or Nero or IE or MS Office..

the difficulty is not to make Linux easier to use but to change the
mindset of users. that is the challenge we face to promote a better
operating system.

as history has shown (think Betamax vs VHS), just being better does not
make it the standard.
