Agreed... it's our choice... depends on what purpose we wanna use them.

anyway, if you wanna use php4 and still don't wanna use xampp like me,
you can simply uncomment universe and backports repo's on your
/etc/apt/sources.list

then apt-get will surely found them after issuing apt-get update
