Sorry smithveg, I am not very familiar with using Gaim for IRC. I only 
use Gaim for chatting and I will use XChat for IRC. Maybe it's the 
problem with Gaim to access the IRC and not the IRC itself.

Maybe you can try using XChat (http://www.xchat.org/). Or anybody in the 
group can help out?
