i'd prefer it to be enabled by default.
If that's not acceptable, an environment variable seems the most
flexible to me (though it's perhaps more confusing/surprising to some users)

do you mean edos-debcheck? will it actually complain because one member
of the disjunction is unavailable though other members could support it?
That sounds like like an unhelpful report to me, though i might be
misunderstanding the purpose.
If it's the only reason to avoid the default, i'd say go ahead and make
it the default.
