Hey team, just circling back on the potluck ideas for next week. I was thinking we could do a theme, maybe 'comfort food classics' That always seems to go over well. My grandma's meatloaf recipe is a sure hit, but I know Sarah is vegetarian, so we should have solid options for everyone. Maybe a hearty lentil shepherd's pie I've got a great recipe for that too.
On a different note, I finally got around to organizing the pantry last weekend. It's amazing how many half-used bags of flour and random spices one can accumulate. Found a container of pumpkin pie spice from two holidays ago. Still smelled okay, but into the bin it went. Makes you think about how we plan meals, doesn't it I've started keeping a list on the fridge door for ingredients we're running low on. It's a simple system, but it works.
Remember that cafe we used to go to near the old office The one with the amazing sourdough I tried to replicate their roasted tomato soup last night. Used a mix of fresh romas and some canned san marzanos for depth. Blitzed it with a bit of fresh basil. It was close, but not quite the same. I think they might use a touch of cream or maybe roast the tomatoes with more garlic. Cooking is such a process of tweaking.
My neighbor dropped off a bag of apples from their tree They're a bit tart, perfect for baking. I'm debating between a classic apple crisp or attempting a tarte tatin The crisp is easier for a weeknight, but the tarte tatin is so impressive. Maybe I'll save the fancy one for the weekend when I have more time to babysit the caramel. Do you have a go-to recipe for either
The book club is reading a culinary memoir this month. It's interesting, but it makes me hungry every time I pick it up. The author describes markets in such vivid detail. It's all about the experience of food, the sounds and smells, not just the recipes. It's a good reminder that sharing a meal is about more than just consumption. It's about the conversation, the setting, the whole atmosphere.
We need to finalize the agenda for the quarterly planning session. I've put 'lunch options' on there as a real item. It shouldn't be an afterthought. A good lunch keeps energy and morale up. Last time, those sad sandwiches were a real low point. Let's do something simple but good. Maybe a build-your-own grain bowl station That usually accommodates most dietary preferences pretty easily.
I was reading an article about the history of the coffee break. It started in the early 20th century, can you believe it Before that, people just worked straight through. It's a small ritual, but an important one. That moment to step away, have a warm drink, maybe a small snack. It's a reset. Makes me appreciate our little kitchen corner here a bit more, even if the coffee machine is sometimes temperamental.
What's everyone doing for the long weekend I'm planning a very low-key barbecue, just family. Keeping it simple: some burgers, a big salad, corn on the grill. The key is to prep the salad dressings and patties the day before. That way, you're not stuck in the kitchen when guests arrive. Or in this case, when the kids start asking for food every five minutes. The goal is to be outside, relaxing.
