While that is a useful and informative account of the reasoning behind
the problem, I would respectfully suggest that Firefox's inability (a)
to shut down gracefully, giving time to save work and (b) to reopen the
tabs are indeed bugs. It doesn't even restart itself, though it says it
will.

As a workaround I have dumped Ubuntu Firefox and shifted to Mozilla,
Updating it is more involved but less annoying.
