Just a small update: my add-on mentioned in comment 37 no longer works
due to the changes in the add-ons API. Sadly, I don't have time to fix
this since I already have too many things on my plate. This means that
there's not really any existing solution for this bug for TB 78 users.

Some sort of fix along the lines of the attached patch (i.e. something
that doesn't require setting a pref) would probably be ideal, although I
haven't done much Thunderbird stuff for a while so couldn't say exactly
what the behavior should be...
