in the course of updating MoreLayouts, this (and some other layout bugs) has been fixed there:
http://morelayoutsforthunderbird.mozdev.org/

the solution is quite simple; a 0 setTimeout on the reloadMessage() call
in updateMailPaneConfig will do it.
