Add-on FireTray allowed not only to see the number of new mails but also
informs about bew incoming chat messages.
(https://foudfou.github.io/FireTray/)  Unfortunately this add-on is
discontinued too. I really hope that this functionality can become
natively supported by Thunderbird when the old add-ons stop working
there.
