I can confirm that apt version thunderbird
1:49.0~b1+build1-0ubuntu0.14.04.2
has corrected the problem on -

DESKTOP=Xfce

USER_GUIDE_URL=help:linuxmint
GRUB_TITLE=Linux Mint 17.3 Xfce 64-bit
The update also disabled the Lightening 4.7 (FYI only).
sudo apt-get update to install the updated thunderbird version
