Is there any reason why this ticket is marked as INVALID? Even if this
will still need a while I think we should not stop working on it.


Maybe another possible solution would be to implement this as an optional API that doesn't require to drop support for legacy applications (at least not in the near future). Developers can make use of this API for copy/cut/paste in their applications and old applications will still act in the current way - either a clipboard manager will take care of this or the clipboard gets lost.
