[Bug 1280922] [NEW] I would like to upgrade my version of Ubuntu. When I try to do so, it prevents me from this process by denying me access. I give the password that I had set up nd it is returning a message that it is no longer valid. Do I have to format my computer and start from scratch?

Public bug reported:

The release I am using is 8.04. I have tried for awhile to get upgrades to work, but to no avail.
Obviously, I have not successfully updated in quite some time.
