Reply to request for more info:

The only changes to the system, since recent updates, is that the kernel
is now 3.8.0-22 generic.

By the way, the file manager is Thunar 1.6.2.

As mentioned above, the crash is not always reproducible and seems to
occur on an inconsistent basis. However, I can usually cause the
operating system to crash by first running either Firefox or
Thunderbird, then starting the other one of these two applications after
the first one has run. Therefore, the system crash is mostly related to
Firefox and Thunderbird, but the system sometimes crashes even when I
have not opened either Firefox or Thunderbird at all during the whole
session.

The Flash package is 11.2.202.285ubuntu0.13.04.1

The Java packages I have are:
     OpenJDK Java runtime 7u21-2.3.9-1ubuntu1
     OpenJDK Java runtime libraries 7u21-2.3.9-1ubuntu1
     libreoffice-officebean 1:4.0.2-0ubuntu1
     tzdat-java 2013b-1ubuntu1
     libhsqldb-java 1.8.0.10-14ubuntu1
     ca-certivicates-java 20121112+nmu2

The Firefox 21.0 extensions are:
     Countwords 1.1
     Easy Google Translate 4.3
     Firebug 1.11.3
     FireFTP 2.0.14
     Global Menu Bar Integration 4.1
     Greek English Spelling dictionary 0.5.5
     HTTPS Finder 0.86
     ImTranslator 5.5
     Open Comment 0.44
     Page Speed 1.12.9.1
     SEO and Website Analysis 1.1
     Ubuntu Firefox Modifications 2.6

Firefox Plugins are:
     LibreOffice Plug-in
     Shockwave Flash 11,2,202,285

Thunderbird 17.0.6 Extensions are:
     EDS Contact Integration 0.5
     Global Menu Bar Integration 3.6.4
     Greek Translator 0.7.3
     Lightning 1.9
Messaging Menu and Unity Launcher Integration 1.3.1
     Provider for Google Calendar 0.18
     Sync Kolab 3.1.0
Timezone Definitions for Mozilla Calendar 1.2011n
     www.Tran 5.2

Thunder Plugins are:
     LibreOffice Plug-in
     Shockwave Flash 11,2,202,285

I caused the operating system to crash when starting up Firefox (after
previously starting up Thunderbird). Then I cold-booted the system and
the following was all that the dbg.txt file said:

   GNU gdb (GDB) 7.5.91.20130417-cvs-ubuntu

Likewise, I caused the operating system to crash when I started up
Thunderbird (after previously starting up Firefox). Then I cold-booted
the system and the following was all that the dbg.text report said:

I hope this helps.

Thanks for looking at this problem.

Greg.
