This works as expected here. It's more than likely a local configuration
issue. Could you please attach the mimeTypes.rdf file from your
Thunderbird profile, and also your
~/.local/share/applications/mimeapps.list.

Please use Apport when submitting Mozilla bugs in future (see
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs). I generally close all bugs
that aren't submitted in this way
