Thanks Chris, this was the reason. Setting that var to false stops this behaviour (Edit-Preferences-Advanced-[Config Editor...] for the curious). 
I never changed/touched this manually, though. The flag seems to be not recognised in earlier versions, since by reverting to an older version it did not flicker. My profile is rather old now, migrated several times.
