1. I can confirm  this issue for both thunderbird 11.0 and thunderbird
10.0.2 on Kubuntu 11.10

this is same issue as  Bug #575116

to fix we have to edit thunderbird launch script at
/usr/lib/thunderbird-<VER>/thunderbird.sh
