I am aware of the ppa for Firefox 8 and I may consider switching to it
for my Ubuntu 11.10 installation, as I am still working on migrating all
the capabilities I have installed in my 10.04 installation (which has
been upgraded several times over the last two or three years) to what
was initially a clean install of 11.04 and now upgraded to 11.10. But,
in my stable 10.04 installation, I am not ready to give up my Firefox
3.6.x install yet, as there are several plug-ins I like using that are
not available yet for Firefox 8; I will switch between the two versions
depending on my needs. That is why I was installing Firefox 8 in
/usr/local/bin. I've been doing this for years, so it is very
frustrating to suddenly encounter this problem, especially since the
upstream Firefox 7 does not exhibit this problem.
