Other applications achieve this just by unmapping their top-level
window, which is pretty hacky (for one thing, the hidden top-level
window continues to use all the resources that it would normally do if
it were on the screen). It would be nice if Thunderbird supported a
"headless" mode where all services would keep running without any top-
level windows at all. That would probably be the correct way to solve
this, other than splitting the backend entirely from the UI
