Could you please attach the output of:
$ ulimit -n

Start thunderbird and run the following command:
$ lsof -p $(pgrep thunderbird)  > /tmp/lsof-p_thunderbird.out
and attach the file /tmp/lsof-p_thunderbird.out

And describe your thunderbird setup.
