Thanks for taking the time to report this and welcome to Ubuntu!  Lets
try to narrow down the problem to the proper package since, like you
said, its probably not firefox.  In a terminal type the following
command and then try playing a video again.

metacity --replace & exit

** Changed in: firefox (Ubuntu)
       Status: New => Incomplete
