Well, I have reverted to tbird 2.0.0.24, available on the tbird website, after some searching. (A 3.0 version was also available, but that kept crashing...) This is a little disappointing, however, for a new version of Ubuntu and I hope it will be fixed soon.
(Reversion is simple enough: sudo rm -rf /usr/bin/thunderbird to remove the programme, but not the mail and settings; then download, untar and move the older version to wherever you want, /usr/bin being the normal place. Mail and settings should be in a folder called .thunderbird and .mozilla-thunderbird - a link - in your home folder. The "new" thunderbird ought to find them automatically.)
