I have had this same bug...but Have found doing the following to fix
it..maybe it will help in finding the problem

when it happens I will bring up the  Appearance Preferences box go to
the Visual Effects and click the

None: Provides a simple desktop environment without any effects.

Once this is done the menus pop back up and then I will set it back to
Extra and reset up compiz and all is good

reason of this happing.

Unknow. Dont know how to cause it....seems to happen randomly
