Yo,

I had to give up on it in the end.

I downloaded the ISO file, wrote the CD. Then wiped my hard drive using
KILLDISK from Hiren's boot disk and did a fresh install.
Surprisingly this did me a lot of good. The boot is much faster now and my
puter is stable again, much like it was using the much beloved 8.04.
The remaining two problems are no wireless, not a disaster because the
modem/router is next to my computer, and a funny bug when logging out from a
Desktop user which gives a Black Screen of Death.

No doubt it will all work itself out in time.

There is no way I'm going back to windows.
