The above upstream post is correct. When pidgin is installed, it sets
purple-url-handler as the default xmpp url handler. You just need to
make sure that libpurple-bin, which provides purple-url-handler, is
installed. Empathy does not seem to register itself as the default
handler, but nevertheless, that's not firefox's problem.
