This happens under additional circumstances. In my case, a wired
connection, and after Suspend, but also with all (two) accounts IMAP and
SSL. My variant steps to reproduce:

1. Run Thunderbird.
2. Verify that "Get Mail" works normally in Thunderbird.
3. Suspend the computer.
4. Awaken the computer.
5. Wait for network to re-establish itself.
6. Click "Get Mail" in Thunderbird.
7. UNEXPECTED dialog "Failed to connect to server xy" appears!
8. Click it away.
9. Clicking "Get Mail" again now just works fine.
