To help those triaging this bug, do you think you could send the
original files as an attachment as well? This way it will be easier to
compare them with your fixes.

I think it might be a good idea to test if the latest PPA packages solve
both problems. Do you think you could try adding the following to
your /etc/apt/sources.list and install the latest language pack (the one
from 20090122)?

deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-langpack/ppa/ubuntu karmic main 
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/ubuntu-langpack/ppa/ubuntu karmic main
