I have a similar issue, but when the flash goes gray, /var/log/kern.log has activity:

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 + i686 + 2.6.31-17-generic + firefox-3.5 +
flashplugin-installer.  I'm new to commenting here, so any other
information required (or a different reporting style), please let me
know.  I found this bug when googling on my problem.
