sorry for my bad english.

I found the only method to fix the hinting issue in karmic for firefox,
thunderbird, (and maybe openoffice) is compiling (buildind) with cairo
option activated, that is with these two rows in .mozconfig file:

ac_add_options --enable-default-toolkit=cairo-gtk2
ac_add_options --enable-system-cairo

I use the .font.conf file method too.
